DRIVE Sculpture
DRIVE is a Grade 5 Titanium Sculptural assembly consisting of twelve tapered bell fins attached to one central connecting node, secured by twelve custom screws, and aligned onto the node by twenty-four 18-8 stainless steel pins.
Each tapered bell fin is 3 and 4 Axis CNC Milled from a solid billet block of Grade 5 Titanium, removing roughly 94% of the material to achieve a lightweight profile, from around 62 grams down to about 3.5 grams. Each fin piece requires around 3 hours of machine time to machine. The 3D-sculpted finishes are uniquely provided by a ball endmill, and calculated with hours of obsessive CAM programming. No hand finish can achieve the same outcome; only complex, technologically advanced CAM software and CNC hardware capable of replicating millions of parts with manufacturing tolerances down to mere microns. All of this never to be repeated beyond two sculptures.
Each central node starts as a 5/8" diameter bar of Grade 5 Titanium and is 4 axis milled with four square and twelve diamond shaped facets (eighteen total) with twenty-four 1mm alignment pin holes and twelve M4x.7 threaded holes. Finish is provided by the CNC machine and electrolytically anodized at 24 volts DC for a royal blue.
Each custom M4x.7 screw is first 2 Axis CNC Lathe-profile turned from Medical Grade 5 Titanium, and CNC Milled for its proprietary tapered quad-drive head, which also required machining a custom matching screwdriver in order to assemble the work together. Finishes are the result of hand-programmed Lathe toolpaths and CAM-calculated Mill toolpaths, with head coloring provided by skillful hand-torch heat coloring transitioning from a bright bronze at the base to a beautiful blue at the top. Because each screw is heat colored by hand, a slight organic variation occurs resulting in each screw being truly unique.
Only two assemblies were created. Serial #01/02 features screws with a full color profile head, while the screws on Serial #02/02 were heat colored immediately after the lathe operations and just before the head milling operations, allowing for a silver-to-blue color contrast in the quad drive milled feature.
Only one sculpture will be available for purchase. Color preference choice is offered to the collector, and the remaining sculpture will be kept in the artist's private collection for use in shows, galleries, and exhibits.
